About Pierre Jeanneret

The East of Baku Chandigarh Collection is a celebration of Pierre Jeanneret's furniture designs from the 1950's for the new modern city of Chandigarh in Northern India.

Le Corbusier, along with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and other prominent European architects of the time including Maxwell Fry, were given the task of developing a masterplan of the city by the Indian government. This included new residential and industrial districts and the design of all civic buildings including various schools, hotels, the state library and the town hall.

Jeanneret was then instructed to create a line of modern furniture pieces for use in all of the buildings. The brief being that the furniture needed to be made from easily sourced local materials, durable for everyday use and able to withstand the high humidity of the region.

Blueprints were then given to local craftspeople who produced these designs from local teak. These designs evolved over many years producing many variations of the original designs.

The Collection

Our curated range of Pierre Jeanneret's most iconic pieces are unparalleled in quality and comfort. 

Each piece is handcrafted over a minimum of 70 hours, using the same manufacturing techniques and dimensions from the 1950's. The only slight difference being the adjustment of the seat height for increased comfort - early chairs were lower than today's standard height of 45cm.

Our teak is locally sourced and seasoned in various ways over six months. Every component is hand cut, assembled and taken through meticulous triple oiling and sanding phases. Once complete, we apply a matte sealant to every piece to protect the surface from staining. 

The final stage is the most intensive - the intricate art of rattan weaving.
Each cane strand is taken through the frame and over time, a web is created. Although time consuming, this is the original and best application - the quality and durability of handwoven rattan cannot be matched. We offer two styles - original box weave, and the popular diamond weave.
